A guide to writing a stand out cover letter

19 Nov 2018

How can you make sure your job application is going to catch the eye of your prospective employer over the potentially hundreds that might fall into their inbox? The best place to start is with a killer cover letter. Here are some top tips...

The cover letter has to be tailored to the role

If the cover letter appears generic or looks like a template used for numerous other job applications it’ll come across as if you haven’t really considered the role you’re applying for and will instantly make the employer think you lack real interest. Ensure you mention the job title and the company name in your opening paragraph and show that you’ve taken the time to read the advert and the job description.

Make sure the cover letter compliments your CV

By highlighting the most relevant skills and experience in your cover letter you are giving the employer an overview of what they can expect to read in your CV. You particularly want to show how your achievements are relative to the role and outline any skills and work experience that you think the employer is looking for, which they can read about in further detail when they get to your CV.

Be enthusiastic and show your excitement for the role

Put across your passion and enthusiasm for the role if you really want to grab the employer's attention. For all you know you may have strikingly similar experience to other applicants, so if you can express your genuine eagerness behind your application it will stand out. Think about how you can use positive language and keep referring back to the job description and how you feel the job will be perfect for you, as much as you are to the job.

Tell them how you’re suited to the position

The employer is looking out for your unique selling points, and what makes you suitable for the job and the company. By pulling apart the job description you can easily reference and relate yourself to the qualities they are looking for. For example if they are looking for someone who is self motivated and a hard worker, you can mention how much you love learning new skills and are quick and eager to do so.

Keep it short, concise and to the point

Ideally a cover letter shouldn’t exceed a page, and should only bring to the forefront the most important and relative pieces of information that make you the best candidate. Keep it punchy, direct and appropriate to the job. The first paragraph should state your interest in applying for the role and demonstrate you have thoroughly read the job ad. Next summarise (in a paragraph or two) your relevant skills and how they apply to the position, before closing the cover letter with your availability for interview and current notice period.
