How to achieve the promotion you deserve

30 Oct 2019

You may feel like you are smashing it at work, but this doesn’t always mean you are due a promotion. Here are the clear signs it’s time to sit down with your line manager and discuss your career development.

  • Is it time? - Have you been at your job for six months or longer? Then it may be time for a promotion. If you have met and exceeded the expectations that were set out in your job interview then it may be time to set new ones. Clearly outline how you are over performing and doing more than your job description this will show your commitment and prove you are ready for more responsibility.
  • Making a difference - When asking for a promotion it’s essential to have an answer when asked ‘why?’. If projects you are leading on, or work you have done has directly made an impact on your team and the company then you are in good standing to advance from your current role. Back-up your ‘why’ with figures where possible (e.g. I have grown this account by X%)
  • Level up - You’ve met all your targets, you’ve checked all the boxes and you’re ready to progress. If you feel like you’ve done all you can in your current position and you need that extra challenge ask for the promotion, if the answer isn’t an immediate yes, at least you will have clarity on what is required for the next level.
