So you have a new job and need to make a winning first impression? Here’s 5 tips on how to introduce yourself well.

Prep your first day speech

An introductory email will be pinged round but don’t let that define you, face-to-face introductions will serve you well. Give a punchy overview of your name and job title plus a little bit of information on your experience. Above all express your enthusiasm for joining the company.

Make an effort with your team

The likelihood is that you’ll have a whip around the office for quick hellos (if you don’t ask to.) But go a step further and call a proper introductory meeting with your immediate team, especially if you are joining in a managerial role. You will be working closely with these people, so it is imperative to make a good first impression.

Don’t leave out remote workers

If you are joining a large operation, you will very likely have members of your team who work in other offices or jurisdictions. Make the effort to give them a call. If possible set up a video call so you can put a face to a name and chat through processes for working together efficiently, despite the distance!

Help yourself out with a seating chart

Avoid saying, ‘Sorry, what was your name again’ on repeat with a seating chart. HR can sometimes provide one, but if not make your own for your immediate team, their job title and key projects you will be working on together to help yourself out.

Smile and enjoy it

New energy is infectious, if you arrive in the office with a smile and can-do attitude, your colleagues will naturally feel positive about your position in their team. At the end of the day we spend the majority of our time at work, so if their time with you is enjoyable, you are on to a winner.
