How to get a great summer job

17 Jun 2019

Whether you’re looking for a summer position as a school leaver, or wanting to bring in some extra pennies between terms at university, there are a few pro tips and tricks to finding a great summer job.

  • Consider what industries to approach: Think about what industries are prevalent where you live - in the Channel Islands we have a variety of sectors perfect for part-time or temporary positions including hospitality, retail, finance and creative agencies. You want to start applying at least a month in advance to find appropriate opportunities.
  • Hit the streets with your CV: It may seem like an old school approach, but it’s still common to see temporary jobs advertised in-store, as well as listed on a company’s website. If you know of somewhere advertising, add a personal touch by dropping off a CV in person.
  • Consider your future career path: If you have an idea of the sort of industry you’d like to eventually join once you’re ready to enter full-time employment, target your interests at these sectors or ones where you can gain similar experience that might help you achieve your goals.
  • Show your eagerness to gain experience: No matter what area of employment you seek, you will gain valuable experience and transferable skills. Express how you’re ready to learn how to work under pressure or experience a professional environment so that you can learn and grow.
