Interview questions: what are your salary expectations?

One of the most difficult questions to answer in any job interview is what you expect as a salary. How do you know if you’re aiming too high or missing out on an opportunity to earn a better wage? Here’s how to answer “what are your salary expectations?”

• Your current salary: If you are interviewing for a similar job role or industry consider what you are currently earning against your level of responsibility. If the new role will require more responsibility or if you are bringing across new skills valuable to the position then you could state these as reasons for a higher wage than you are currently on. Alternatively if you are comfortable with your current salary it is a good starting point.

• Flexibility: Getting the balance between aiming high and not putting yourself as unaffordable in the eyes of the employer is tricky. If you feel uncomfortable stating an exact figure, let the interviewer know that you are looking for a wage reflecting your experience and skills, and from this you could come to an agreement together.

• Give a range: Following on from showing your flexibility in a salary agreement, most employers are still interested in a range figure. Research the industry to prepare a range you would be comfortable with, but make sure the lower figure is the minimum you’d be happy to take home. If the employer can see your value to the role they may be happy to offer you the higher end of the scale.

• Raise your salary: If you feel that your current salary does not reflect your work performance and is one of the reasons you are interviewing elsewhere then express this to the interviewer and let them know how your enthusiasm and expertise makes you more valuable than what you are currently earning. Combine this with your desire for continued growth and career progression with their company.
