Negotiating non-monetary benefits in the workplace.

06 Aug 2018

Many people equate appraisal time with a bonus or salary increase, however with an ever changing economy sadly this isn’t always viable for your company. In this instance there are other non-monetary benefits that employees value which smart employers will listen to and action.

Here are some non-monetary benefits you can negotiate into your contract…

Flexible hours

If you are doing a great job for your company but can’t be offered further value in terms of salary, ask for a more flexible working schedule. This could mean the odd day working from home, working Monday - Thursday instead of a full week or leaving work slightly earlier every day. Decide what works best for you and discuss how it could benefit your performance but also the company.

Extra annual leave

Additional days off instead of a monetary incentive for good work could be an alternative that works well for both parties. Your company may already have an Employee of the Month recognition with the reward being an extra day’s annual leave for the year or give all of the staff a day off for their birthday. But if you are working hard with no monetary benefits - asking for additional days holiday is perfectly within your right.

Paid training or professional development

To continue to develop in your career a personal development training plan is imperative. CPD allows you to hone or expand your skill set and keep informed of your industry’s best practice and regulations. The likelihood is your employer will be more than happy to support this drive towards development. So research courses and make your case.

Arrange for a pay review later in the year

A pay rise might not be on the cards right now but that does not mean that will be the case in 6-12 months. Be open with your line manager about shortcomings in your current contract and set a date in the calendar to discuss the subject again.
