Our illustrated guide to dressing for success part 1

20 May 2019

First impressions really do count, so what you choose to wear to an interview can be just as important as how you answer the questions. Here’s our illustrated guide to looking the part at your next job interview, starting with the gents.

 Business Interview:

- Hair: Recently cut and neatly styled, should be of shorter length.

- Facial hair: Minimal and well groomed or cleanly shaven.

- Suit: A dark coloured, pressed suit, suitable length sleeves.

- Tie: Silk neck-tie, a solid colour or conservative pattern.

- Shirt: A light, neutral solid colour shirt, always tucked in.

- Trousers: Pressed and appropriate length

- Shoes: Smart leather shoes, well polished.

Accessories: Minimal jewellery, smart wrist watch if you own one.

Casual Interview:

- Hair: Well groomed and neatly styled.

- Facial hair: Well groomed or cleanly shaven.

- Jacket/jumper: An smart/casual jacket or pullover cardigan is appropriate.

- Shirt: A more relaxed style, tie optional depending on the style of shirt worn.

- Trousers: Smart dark denim, khaki, gabardine or cotton pants, neatly pressed.

- Shoes: Smart clean shoes, well polished if leather. Avoid trainers.

Accessories: A little more relaxed, shouldn't be too bold or distracting.
