Winning remote interview tips 📱💻

08 Oct 2018

Phone or video interviews can be a very efficient way to progress a job application whilst travelling or between your current work commitments. However this method can be less natural than meeting someone face to face. Here are our 5 tips to a successful remote interview.

  1. Be prepared - Allow yourself to be flexible with different methods of call including Skype, FaceTime and of course mobile voice calls. Make sure to test out your method of call prior to the real deal to ensure there are no pesky technical issues and there is enough signal / wifi.
  2. Prepare your surroundings - In a similar vein, make sure the background of your video call is neat and tidy. You don’t want to distract your interviewer, you want to be memorable for the excellent interview instead. Stick to a plain wall to be safe.
  3. Look the part - Gauge the vibe of the workplace and dress accordingly. It is important to look professional and put together on a video call, it will also help your own mindset and get you in the zone (even if you are only on a voice call.)
  4. Be open - Smile, keep eye contact, and stay engaged. In the comfort of your home office or kitchen you still need to be on it. Although a bit of humour is totally acceptable, it’s important for the interviewer to see you will fit in with their team.
  5. Visual aids - The benefit of having a phone (or even video call) is that you can have visual aids in front of you if you need. Scribble down anything you feel is important to ask your potential employer. Anticipate difficult questions and jot down key words as reminders.
