4 things you should cover in your next appraisal

Performance reviews can be stressful but this is actually an opportunity for you to be honest about what you want to achieve in the next six months, where you see your long term role within the business, plus raise any concerns you may have. The sure way to get the most out of this process is to arrive prepared, here’s our appraisal checklist….

1. Talk about your achievements

Not only will this always come across positively as you are talking about work that you are proud of, but it is a case study of your talent and worth to the company. Having prepared scenarios which have brought your company success in the locker is a sure way to ensure your manager recognises both what motivates you at work, but also your accomplishments.

2. Be clear about your career aspirations

Let your manager know what you expect out of your job and where you want to be in the next six months, but always relate it to the company and how you will bring value. They are not mind readers and unless you say so, will assume you are happy. So articulate what you want. If that’s a promotion say it, if that’s more training saying it. If you don’t ask you certainly don’t get.

3. Take any criticism constructively

The process is also for an open discussion with your line manager, things that are working great, but also things that can be improved. Certainly fight your corner but accept any shortcomings graciously, and decide clear actions to improve these by your next appraisal.

4. Highlight any skills you have that can drive the business forward

Think openly and creatively about how your skill set can benefit the company. And discuss potential growth opportunities you can drive forward. Showing interest in the company’s development as a whole is always going to be positive.
