Helping the kids on their job search

08 Jul 2019

Parents want their children to have access to the best opportunities, and it is essential for parents to know how to prepare their children for the future. It can be tempting to hold your child’s hand through the process but it is important the journey is driven by the individual applying for roles. Here are healthy ways to assist your child in their job search, without doing it for them.

  • Provide them with guidance throughout the process. Help them practice interview skills and review the details of the job description, such as salary, benefits etc, as they may not be familiar with these considerations of a new job.
  • Set a positive example. Sharing your own interview stories and positive experiences will make your child feel more encouraged and comfortable going through the job process.
  • Encourage them to explore their options. There are always numerous workshops and career fairs held by schools and career services you should encourage your child to attend. This will allow them to explore all of their options and they’ll find something they are genuinely interested in.
  • Allow them to make their own decisions. You should encourage your children to make their own choices, in order for them to be happy in the workplace, in a job they are genuinely interested in. Support them along the way, however do try not to push them down a particular career path.
