Job applications: how to identify your key strengths
Whether it’s a quick fire question round in an interview face-to-face or within your covering letter and CV, the most important thing to do when you are applying for a job is sell yourself - something that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. To do this you need to identify your key strengths, here’s how…..
Step 1. Brainstorm
The first step is actually taking time out to think about things you do well in the workplace. Write a list of at least 20 qualities that make you a strong candidate. It is imperative to be self aware and honest during this process. If you need inspiration ask people you have worked with, you may learn something that you do really well completely unconsciously or look back over previous performance reviews.
Step 2. Apply this list to the job description
Think about the job you are applying for and what the employer wants. Make sure that:
- Your strengths align with the company’s needs
- Prove you can do the job
- Set you apart from the competition
- Show your value as a member of their team
Step 3. Think of examples where these qualities have been exercised
Be prepared to talk about how you have shown these qualities. That way when asked for examples of how you have demonstrated your strengths - you aren’t thrown. If possible think of specific scenarios from your career which are relevant to your potential new role.
Step 4. Leave modesty at the door. Employers are looking for confidence!
They want to feel confident that you are the right candidate. You are competing against a pool of other applicants, don’t dampen your strengths and undersell yourself. Preparing via the above steps will help you shine giving yourself the best chance of getting the job.
